Bicycle route - Leenderbos and De Malpie 27.6 km

Description >

This bicycle route has several excellent starting locations. ‘Grand Cafe and Restaurant de Zwaan’, for example, or ‘Eetcafé De Woeste Hoeve’ in Borkel and Schaft, or the Achelse Kluis Safe or Venbergse Molen near Valkenswaard. Each and every one of these places offer the opportunity to enjoy a bite to eat or a refreshing drink in a typical Burgundian atmosphere. This beautiful journey of more than 32 km leads past beautiful fens and through the woods and heathland. You also pass the Saint Antonius Abt windmill in Borkel and Schaft, that dates back to 1865, and the Achelse Kluis on the Dutch-Belgian border. Just outside Valkenswaard lies a nature reserve full of beautiful heathlands and fens. The lakes and ponds differ in size and are home to a diverse population of animals and plants. Some of the more peculiar plants that grow here include common sundew, marsh gentian, tormentil and hellweed. The area is also home to many butterflies and dragonflies, and occasionally you might spot mammals such as rabbits and foxes scurrying away. Also don’t be surprised to look upon sheep quietly grazing in the wild. The route takes you predominantly through the Leenderbos and De Malpie, two important nature areas of nature border park De Groote Heide.

The wire

The Wire, also called Dodendraad or Dodenhek, was a wire barrier created by German occupiers during Belgium during the First World War along the border between occupied Belgium and the neutral Netherlands. In German pieces, the barrier was officially referred to as Grenzhochspannungshindernis. The barrier was under deadly electric tension and had to prevent war volunteers from escaping Belgium. At the same time, the fence had to prevent spying messages from occupied territory from reaching Allied spy services through the Netherlands and served to stop the smuggling.

Pingoruine

A pingoruan is a natural gift from the Ice Age. It's like this:

Pingo's originated in the ice age because groundwater rises and freezes below the surface of the tundra. In addition, the sand layer is pushed upward and lateral and forms a hill called 'pingo' by the eskimo's. Such a pingo can reach a height of 70 meters in special cases. During the ice age, pingo's also formed in the Netherlands. After melting the ice the hill collapsed as it were and a pit with riot edges emerged. In a number of cases, the upward pushed sand forms an increase in the center of the pit. There is then a ring vein.

At the little Hasselsven, such a special pingo can be found. Here you can come, but you will have to walk a bit. It's really a nice experience.
