How to reach

Hiking - Hamont-Achel trappist route 7.4 km

Description >

The trappist walk starts at the Achelse Kluis in Hamont-Achel (Belgium). The route crosses the border to Brabant (NL) and its beautiful heathland, forests and fens. You will have quite the adventure through the area of the Leenderbos, where paved roads alternate with dirt paths. With a little luck you can see the heath sheep grazing the heathland. They make sure that the heath remains intact, so we can continue enjoying this beautiful area. The end of the route is right where you started, namely at the St. Benedict Abbey (Achelse Kluis) in Hamont-Achel. An ideal walk for an inexperienced hiker, but surely not without appeal to veteran hikers or nature lovers.

The wire

The Wire, also called Dodendraad or Dodenhek, was a wire barrier created by German occupiers during Belgium during the First World War along the border between occupied Belgium and the neutral Netherlands. In German pieces, the barrier was officially referred to as Grenzhochspannungshindernis. The barrier was under deadly electric tension and had to prevent war volunteers from escaping Belgium. At the same time, the fence had to prevent spying messages from occupied territory from reaching Allied spy services through the Netherlands and served to stop the smuggling.
