Beverbeek Heath

Many place names in Hamont-Achel still refer to the heath that used to be commonplace. A beautiful example is the Beverbeekse Heide. It wasn't until the second half of the last century that the heathlands here were converted to pine forest. Did the heath completely disappear? No, not entirely. Here and there, at the edges of the forest and in clearings, it survives. Those brave remnants have recently gained a lot more space through natural connections.

Pingo ruin

A pingo ruin is a natural gift from the ice age.

Pingo's were formed in the ice age when rising ground water froze below the surface of the tundra. This pushed sand layers up and to the sides, creating a hill that the Eskimos call a 'pingo'. Such pingos were sometimes able to reach heights of no less than 70 metres. During the last ice age this phenomenon also occurred in the Netherlands. When the ice finally melted, the hill collapsed in on itself as it were, creating a pit with elevated edges. In some instances the sand that was pushed up formed an elevation in the middle of the pit. This would then create a ring fen.

Such a special pingo can be found near the Klein Hasselsven. It is a fairly long walk, but it is possible to reach this area on foot. A humbling and wonderful experience.
