The area around the Achelse Kluis has a long religious tradition. There was a chapel as early as 1656 and in 1686 Peter van Eijnatten from Eindhoven founded a community of hermits there. In 1846 the Westmalle monks founded the Saint Benedictine Abbey. Achelse Kluis website>

Centrum Achel - Kerk Achel

The church in the city centre of Achel was built in Gothic style during the 15th century. In the early 1900s a tower standing 42 metres high was added to the church, along with its own set of church bells.

About the municipality

Hamont-Achel is a largely wooded municipality in the most northern tip of the province of Limburg, in the Kempen in Belgium. Its inhabitants number over 14,000, of whom 3,485 are of Dutch nationality. Hamont-Achel was created in 1977 by the merger of the Hamont and Achel municipalities. The new municipality regained its former city status and city rights in 1985, which included a flag and a coat of arms. The municipality is part of the electoral canton and cantonal court of Neerpelt.
